A Tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald - November 10, 1975
Released in honor of the 50th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the great iron ore freighter that vanished beneath Lake Superior during a fierce November storm.
That night, waves over 35 feet high and hurricane-force winds battered the mighty lake. The Fitzgerald had lost her radar and was navigating by radio contact with the nearby Arthur M. Anderson, which attempted to guide her through the blinding snow and darkness.
At 7:10 p.m., Captain Ernest McSorley sent his final transmission:
“We are holding our own.”
Moments later, the Fitzgerald disappeared from radar without a distress call, taking all 29 men aboard to the depths just 17 miles northwest of Whitefish Point. A stretch of Lake Superior that is now called the Graveyard of the Great Lakes, where over 200 ships now rest at the bottom of the lake.
When the storm finally broke, the Arthur M. Anderson, along with the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Woodrush and the freighter William Clay Ford, went back out into the icy waters to search for survivors. They found only two battered lifeboats and floating debris, the Fitzgerald and her crew were gone.
The Edmund Fitzgerald remains a symbol of strength, sacrifice, and the humbling power of Lake Superior. A reminder that even iron and grit can yield to nature’s hand.
